Definition:

A vector in spreadsheet programs such as Excel is a range of adjacent cells that is only one row or one column in size.

There is no limit to the number of cells in the range, but the cells must all reside in the same row or column.

An example of where a vector is used in Excel is in the LOOKUP function.

This function has two forms:

  • the vector form which is used for ranges that are a single column or row in size
  • the array form which is used for ranges that contain multiple columns or rows (multiple vectors)

The vector form of the LOOKUP function searches a single row or column for a specified value and then return a value from the same position in a second row or column.

An analogy for a vector and array would be that of a sentence and a paragraph.

A vector would be equivalent to a single sentence while an array would be equivalent to a paragraph, which is usually composed of multiple sentences.
