Use the Fill Down Command with a Keyboard Shortcut

This Excel tip shows you how to apply the Fill Down command in an Excel spreadsheet using a keyboard shortcut.

The key combination that applies the Fill Down command is:

  • Ctrl + D

Example of How to Applying the Fill Down command using a Keyboard Shortcut

Note: For help with this example, see the image to the right.

  1. Add a number, such as 395.54 to cell D1 in Excel.

  2. Add formatting, such as changing the font color and background color of cell D1.

  3. Drag select cells D1 to D7 to highlight them.

  4. Press and hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard.

  5. Press and release the " D " key on the keyboard without releasing the Ctrl key.

  6. Cells D2 to D7 should now be filled with the same data and formatting as cell D1.
