The marching ants are an animated or running border surrounding a range of cells in an Excel spreadsheet. The marching ants are seen when a range is selected for copying or for inclusion in a chart, a function, a list or in other operations in Excel.

The purpose of the marching ants is to make it obvious which range of cells has been activated for a pending operation.

Also Known As: running border, animated border
Examples: After clicking on the copy button you will notice that the range you selected with the mouse is now surrounded by the marching ants border. The marching ants indicates the range of cells that will be pasted into the second sheet of the workbook.
