Align Data in Excel

By default in Excel, text data, such as labels and column titles are left aligned - which means the data is located on the left side of the cell.

Numbers, formulas, and dates, which are referred to as values, are right aligned by default.

These default alignments of data are not always the best choice, so Excel makes it easy to improve the layout and appearance of a worksheet by using the alignment icons on the Home tab of the ribbon.

In the previous step, we used the merge and center option to center the worksheet title.

In this step we will use the alignment icons to center and right align the data in other cells in order to improve the appearance of the worksheet and to make it easier to read the data.

Tutorial Steps:

  1. Select cells B3 to B5 to highlight the Date and Deduction Rate labels.

  2. Click on the Align text right option on the ribbon to right align these labels.

  3. Select cells C3 to C5.

  4. Click on the Center option on the ribbon to center the data in these cells.

  5. Select cells A7 to F11.

  6. Click on the Center option on the ribbon to center the data in these cells.
