Using auto fill in Excel

Definition:

Auto fill occurs when Excel automatically fills selected cells with data. Excel has several preset series (months of the year and days of the week) that are used with the fill handle.

If January is typed in a cell and then the fill handle used to select adjacent cells, Excel will fill those cells with the next names in the series – February, March, April and so on.

Users can add their own series to this list by going to Tool > Options > Custom List in the menus.

Alternate Spellings: autofill, AutoFill
Examples: After typing Monday in the first cell, drag select with the fill handle down over the adjacent cells. Excel will auto fill these cells with the the rest of the days of the week.
